Diamond Guide

Picking your perfect diamond

Choosing a diamond is simpler than the industry makes it seem. This guide explains what the grades mean, and what actually matters.

Every diamond is graded on the same four scales. This is how to read them.

01

Cut

Cut determines how a diamond returns light. It is the grade the eye reads first, and the only one of the four that depends entirely on human skill rather than on what the stone arrived with.

  • Excellent Maximum brilliance and fire, the full measure of light performance
  • Very Good Nearly indistinguishable from Excellent in ordinary light
  • Good Noticeably less light return, acceptable in smaller stones
  • Fair / Poor Visibly diminished brilliance. We do not set these grades
Our Advice

Choose Excellent or Very Good, nothing below. If the budget asks for a concession, give up carat before brilliance.

02

Color

Diamonds are graded on a color scale from D (colorless) to Z (light yellow or brown). The less color present, the rarer and more desirable the diamond, though the difference is often invisible to the naked eye.

  • D – F Colorless, the highest grade, commanding premium pricing
  • G – J Near Colorless, minimal color, visible only side by side
  • K – M Faint Color, noticeable tint in larger stones
  • N – Z Very Light to Light Color, visible yellow or brown tint
Our Advice

G–H reads colorless to nearly every eye. Pay for what you can see, not for the letter on the report.

03

Clarity

Clarity refers to the presence of internal inclusions or external blemishes. Most inclusions are microscopic and do not affect the diamond's beauty, and are invisible to the naked eye.

  • FL – IF Flawless to Internally Flawless, extremely rare
  • VVS1–2 Very Very Slightly Included, an excellent choice
  • VS1–2 Very Slightly Included, great value, eye-clean
  • SI1–2 Slightly Included, good value if eye-clean
  • I1–3 Included, inclusions visible to the naked eye
Our Advice

VS1–VS2 is eye-clean. The difference from VVS exists under a loupe, not across a table.

04

Carat weight

Carat refers to the diamond's weight, not its physical size. One carat equals 200 milligrams. Two diamonds of the same carat weight can appear different sizes depending on their cut and shape.

  • 0.50–0.99ct Delicate and refined: ideal for everyday elegance
  • 1.00–1.49ct Classic size: timeless appeal and presence
  • 1.50–1.99ct Statement piece: an impressive, noticeable presence
  • 2.00ct+ Bold luxury: unmistakable brilliance
Our Advice

Weights just under the round numbers, 0.90 rather than 1.00 carat, look identical on the hand and price very differently.
